Courtyard: Transition space between the House and the City
On the top of a promontory of Santana hill, remains the old enclosure of Santo António dos Capuchos’s Convent, now part of the Lisbon’s Hospital Center.
This part of the city is surrounded by a ancient wall that encircles not only the heritage, but the urban collective memory of Santana hill.
The project, as the understanding of the preexistent space, is the approach used to increase the value of this territory.
The establishment of new collective buildings, such a social center, a school and a rehabilitation center; extend the public character of the area, while the new adjacent dwellings aim their integration into the urban fabric.
The threshold, the moment between the inside and the outside, is extended through the materialization of galleries and courtyards, which arise as the product of the project method and the conclusion of the operational instruments used at the case studies analyzed, drawing a diffuse transition between public and private space.
